Former Indian skipper and ex-Chairman of the Selection Committee Krishnamachari Srikkanth said that had he currently been the Chairman of the Selectors, Pacer Mohammed Shami would have been part of the Men in Blue squad for the upcoming 2022 Asia Cup, which will take place from August 27 onwards. The All-India Senior Selection Committee announced the 14-man roster for the upcoming Asian Cup on Monday. This year’s highly anticipated Asia Cup cricket tournament will take place from August 27. “In my team, Shami was literally there. If I was the chairman of the selection committee, I think Shami would have been there and probably I would not have gone with Ravi Bishnoi. But I still believe that Axar Patel was a serious contender in my team. It would have been a big toss-up between Axar Patel and Ashwin,” Srikkanth said on Star Sports’ ‘Follow The Blues’ show.
Srikkanth believes the squad is good, but still needs a medium pacer. He feels sorry for Axar Patel, who could not make the selection.
“I’m very happy for Deepak Hooda – he can bowl a bit, he’s a good batter and he’s a good striker of the ball. What I like about Deepak Hooda is that he’s a good striker of the ball, he’s a flirter Otherwise this squad is a fantastic squad just feel sorry for Axar Patel I still believe he is a good bowling all rounder maybe in Australian conditions I’m not just going for the Asian Cup but yes this must also be a blueprint for the ICC T20 World Cup,” he added.
Former Indian wicketkeeper and ex chief of selectors Kiran More also said the event will be special for Virat Kohli as he has to make a comeback. “It’s been too many innings. The other batsmen have also performed really well. Overall the squad looks good and is well balanced. There are good all-rounders too – R Ashwin has hit well. Definitely, Axar Patel has performed too good all year round.
I like the team combination and I was very happy with the selection of Ravi Bishnoi. It brought variety to the team. I think this is a good team. I am also happy for Arshdeep Singh. He performed well in the IPL against the West Indies, where he was the Player of the Series and threw well. We were looking for a left arm bowler, which we found in Arshdeep Singh,” he added.
Asia Cup starts on August 27 and ends on September 11. The highly anticipated match between India and Pakistan will take place on August 28.
The 15th edition of the tournament will be played in the UAE between six teams (main event). Defending champion India is also the most successful team, having won the trophy seven times. While the last edition of the tournament was held in an ODI format, this edition will feature the T20 format.
The six teams are divided into two groups with India, Pakistan and a qualifying team in Group A; and Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan make up Group B. Each team will play each other once in the group stage, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the Super 4 round. The best 2 teams of Super 4 qualify for the final.
