Previously, Mumbai Indians won the toss and chose to field first and made no changes to the XI in play. However, Lucknow Super Giants were forced to make a change when young Madhya Pradesh pacer Avesh Khan ran into a glitch and Mohsin Khan replaced him on the team.

Bowling all-rounder Daniel Sams opened the attack for Mumbai Indians against Lucknow Super Giants openers KL Rahul and Quinton de Kock and he bowled 4 point balls while conceding just 2 runs. Hrithik Shokeen handed over for second and threw 5 dot balls while giving up 4 runs. The third over was a big one for Lucknow Super Giants, as the openers defeated Sams for 14 runs.

Jasprit Bumrah got the first break for MI in the 4th over by sacking Quinton de Kock for 10 on the last ball from the over. Riley Meredith gave up 2 runs in the 5th over and Jaydev Unadkat gave up 3 runs in the 6th over and at the end of the power play Lucknow Super Giants were at 32/1.

Rahul and Manish Pandey continued to hit cautiously for the next few overs, but they attacked Riley Meredith in the 10th over, crushing 17 runs, helping LSG reach 72/1 by the end of the 10th over.
