Children in Washington D.C. are returning to school in the fall.

Washington D.C. government will send direct payments worth $1,000 to hundreds of thousands of residents.

According to several reports, Washington D.C. has a $14.7 million fund to help the family of children who return to school on August 29.

"We know if we're giving moms and families what they need to get an early start for the school year, then they're going to use it for what they need," Mayor Muriel Bowser told reporters.

According to the D.C. Mayor, people enrolled in the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program are eligible to get up to $1,000.

"Families of four can make no more than $870 a month to qualify for the benefits,"
