Quite understandably, many pundits have raised the case for Malik’s selection in the Indian team, and Shastri also has now joined the bandwagon. Speaking on what BCCI should do with the 22-year-old, he said “Central contract straightway. And keep him in the mix, don’t let him float around. Keep him in the mix with the main players and then he learns seeing, being around with the (Mohammed) Shamis and the (Jasprit) Bumrahs, and see the way they train, see the way they manage their workload.”

Umran Malik could be selected in the Indian team for the upcoming T20I series against South Africa

The former Indian coach further explained his stance by elaborating on how Malik’s raw and brute pace and rattle any new batter on the crease. †If he gets a wicket and new guy comes in, he can really rattle him because he has got the pace, he can keep the bloke on his toes, but it’s that line – if he gets into that channel, without cutting his pace it will make a huge difference,” he stated.

While some believe it might be too early for Umran Malik to don the royal blue, Shastri has an opposing viewpoint as he claims “Of course, there’ll be the team management there, support staff, that’ll help him do that, but don’t let him stray at the moment. Get him into the mix, and keep him there and groom him.”

Meanwhile, Umran Malik has established himself as the number one bowling asset for his IPL team, Sunrisers Hyderabad. He has picked up 21 wickets in his 13 appearances, maintaining an average of 20 and an economy rate of 8.93 runs per over.
