Pat Cummins hit the joint-fastest fifty (14 balls) in IPL history.
Pat Cummins returned to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) side in style after missing the first three games as the Australian crushed the joint-fastest fifty in IPL history. Cummins registered the fifty in just 14 deliveries after taking two wickets to write a five-wicket win for his team against Mumbai Indians (MI) in match 14 of IPL 2022 at the MCA Stadium in Pune. The Knight Riders chased the goal of 162 with four overs to spare as they climbed to the top of the table with three wins in four games.
Speaking of how the meeting went, skipper Shreyas Iyer won the toss and chose to field first. While MI replaced Anmolpreet Singh and Tim David with Suryakumar Yadav and the young Dewald Brevis respectively, KKR dropped Tim Southee and Shivam Mavi for Pat Cummins and Rasikh Salam. Openers Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan scored just three and 14 points respectively. The star of the 2022 U-19 World Cup, Dewald Brevis, showed a glimpse of his batting as he amassed 29 of 19 deliveries. Suryakumar Yadav returned and hit a fifty with Tilak Varma and Kieron Pollard scoring 38 and 22 points respectively to bring MI’s total to 161.
Venkatesh Iyer recorded half a century as other KKR batters struggled to contribute. Their middle class collapsed as Nitish Rana’s poor run in the tournament continued. Andre Russell also failed to score much, as he was sacked for just 11 points. Cummins then came out with all the guns blazing as he hit an unbeaten 56 runs off just 15 balls with four fours and six maximums.
Cummins’ compatriot Daniel Sams gave up 35 runs in the 16th left while KKR famously scored with four overs to go. Sams threw the third most expensive over in league history. KKR kept their winning record in Pune intact as they have now played seven matches at the venue and have won all seven of them. For his excessive and destructive blow to go with the two wickets, Pat Cummins was named Player of the Match.
