Lucknow Super Giants have dethroned Gujarat Titans from the top spot in the points table.
The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) decimated the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by 75 runs in a one-sided match in Match 53 of IPL 2022 at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune on May 7. Thanks to this win, Lucknow has managed to dethrone Gujarat Titans from the top spot with eight wins from 11 games and 16 points to their total with a superior net run rate of 0.703.
Kolkata skipper Shreyas Iyer won the toss and chose to bowl first. The move initially paid off as he ran out of his counterpart, KL Rahul, out for a diamond duck in the very first about. Quinton de Kock and Deepak Hooda then made the save with 71 points for the second wicket. While De Kock scored 50 runs from 29 deliveries, Hooda contributed with a 27-ball 41 as LSG scored a challenging total of 176/7.
KKR Loses Momentum in Their Chase Against LSG
In response, KKR was never really present in the game from the start and was reduced to 25/4 in the seventh over. The middle order duo of Andre Russell and Rinku Singh tried to do the unthinkable from then on as they added 44 runs for the fifth wicket score. Only the recoil in the end turned out not to be good enough.
After Russell was fired for a quickfire 19-ball 45, his West Indian teammate Sunil Narine played a cameo knock of 22 runs off 12 balls. In the end, the two-time winners tied for 101 in the 15th over. Avesh Khan took three wickets for LSG while conceding with a stunning 6.30 and was named Player of the Match.
Losing skipper, Shreyas Iyer said:
They beat us in both divisions – batting and bowling. We started badly in the power play and we also leaked a lot of runs in the death overs. We couldn’t read how it (the field) was going to play, so we chose bowling based on that. I thought we could have narrowed them down to 155-160. They eventually came to a very nice total. We (myself and McCullum) talk about hunting, we have this conversation every now and then. I’ve won a lot of tosses, but it would have been good if I’d lost those tosses. We can’t take advantage of the little things. We bowled great in the middle overs, but we need to do well in the power play and death overs. We have to assess that and bounce back. We have to do that in the next three games.
Winning skipper, KL Rahul said:
Played really well, started well with the bat, except for the run out. Was a tough wicket. Knew it would be slow and sticky. Had to get around 150-160. The way Quinton and Deepak hit made it look easy. Big shots from Stoinis and Jason gave the momentum. We got off to a great start with the ball, put the ball in the right places, we couldn’t have asked for more. Trust them a lot (his tempo battery). Having skill is one thing, but knowing what to do when is important. They have been pressured a few times, but they have stuck to their strengths and have been brave with the ball. That’s all we can ask for. Keep trusting what the best ball is on that wicket. Dre Russ going like this is scary sometimes. We do have some plans for the game, and it’s good to see them remembering those plans under pressure. If we’re going to run from there, that’s acceptable. I still can’t think of a game where we had a full performance. Still points for improvement. Don’t think that a team will be perfect, that’s not what we strive for. Everyone wants to contribute and that is nice to see. I don’t know if we’re peaking at the right time, but we’re taking the wins, doing what’s expected of us, sticking to our plans.
Player of the match, Avesh Khan said:
The goal was to get him out (Russell). Had a talk with Rahul, the talk was if I get hit before six from a hard ball I will still stand behind it. Saw him get this far. He is a player who can win the game on his own. My father always motivates me, even the coaches here, and Gautam and Rahul. The role is to take wickets and win games. We’ve been second in the last four games, so we have an idea of the field.
