Kolkata Knight Riders broke their winless streak by beating Rajasthan Royals.
After losing five consecutive matches, the Kolkata Knight Riders finally returned to winning ways by beating the Rajasthan Royals by seven wickets in Match 47 of IPL 2022 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on May 2. Meanwhile, the Royals now have two consecutive defeats in three days.
KKR skipper Shreyas Iyer won the toss and chose to bowl first. They got rid of opener Devdutt Padikkal early on. Jos Buttler made his presence felt with some glorious strokes, but his stay in the crease was cut short in the ninth left for just 22 runs to his name. While other batters failed to impress, skipper Sanju Samson single-handedly drove RR innings, scoring 54 runs on 49 deliveries that took Rajasthan to 152/5.
Nitish Rana helps KKR cross the line
In response, Kolkata lost the opener Aaron Finch cheap and Baba Indrajith didn’t last long either. Captain Shreyas Iyer then took control of the proceedings, scoring 34 runs off 32 balls. After his dismissal, the middle-class duo of Nitish Rana and Rinku Singh made sure there were no more hitches and successfully helped KKR cross the line in the final. While Nitish went unbeaten on 48 runs from 37 deliveries, Rinku Singh was unbeaten on a 23-ball 42.
Losing skipper, Sanju Samson said:
“The wicket was a little slow but they bowled really well too, but with the kind of batting we had we would have liked a little more boundaries at the end and a little better finish. I think we were 15-20 runs short. With a few niggles from the last few games, it feels good now and I’m recovering well. It’s a great effort (with the ball), we really fought in the game and the energy was really great. Personally, we should have hit a little better. Sure, win the next toss for sure. We have to keep judging the game and whoever is batting with you wickets at the wrong time stopped myself from continuing with the momentum. I wanted to build the partnership and when I wanted to go hard I think they bowled really well and we couldn’t execute our shots. †
Winning skipper, Shreyas Iyer said:
“From the power play when our bowlers gave up just 36 runs and took a wicket, it was just the start we needed. We’ve been talking about Umesh from the start. He has picked up his pace, bowling those hard pieces and as captain you just have to give him the ball to deliver. Whenever I pass the ball to Sunil Narine, he gets wickets for me, but the batsmen don’t take any chances against him. He’s very frugal, but if he gets a wicket, he gets a big one. The way Rinku persists is calm, playing only his second or third game is excellent. He is a great asset to the franchise going forward. The way he gets his stay, he doesn’t look like a newcomer. We are looking for a good start. I like pressure, but it takes a lot of effort to build up the innings in each game. Before the match I told Mavi, Rinku and Anukul to take the difficult positions in the field. Mavi’s catch of Buttler was amazing.”
Player of the match, Rinku Singh said:
“A lot of players have played Ranji from Aligarh, but I’m the first to play the IPL. This is a big league and obviously there’s a lot of pressure. I’ve been waiting for the last five years to get a chance. I’ve worked really hard , came back from injury and also did well on the domestic circuit. When I was hitting, Bhaiyya (Rana) and Baz (McCullum) told me to stay until the end and finish it.”
