RAJASTHAN ROYALS INNINGS

RR 99/3 in 14 overs: Wave and miss from Hetmyer as Hasaranga uses the cross seam to swing him past the Guyanese. Hetmyer finally cuts through the cover area with two back-to-back fours.

RR 89/3 in 13 overs: Since 2018, Harshal’s economy is at its lowest between 7 and 15 (7.5). He continues to do well and varies his pace and length throughout the over. We get the second time-out of the innings.

RR 86/3 in 12 overs: Hasaranga will bowl to Samson. The Sri Lanka all-rounder has had it better than the Rajasthan skipper in the IPL. In four innings, Samson has lost his wicket three times to Hasaranga. Clipped! Samson heads for center while Hasaranga retrieves one and lands it right in the batter’s arc. Wicket! Samson lobs a length delivery back to the bowler. 4/5 now.

RR 80/2 in 11 overs: Akash Deep mixes up his deliveries to confuse Samson, who is just entering. Only four runs come out of this one.

RR 76/2 in 10 overs: Harshal, RCB’s designated death-overs specialist, has been called in early. A slower bouncer of 113 km/h is called a wide. He goes around the wicket at Padikkal and the trick works wonders. This bowled fuller and Padikkal went for the wild one-handed swipe. Kohli had plenty of time to sit under the skier halfway through the time.

RR 73/1 in 9 overs: Hasaranga is involved in the attack. Buttler reaches the 100th six of his IPL career. Glides across the court sending him 90 yards deep into the stands at midwicket. With that, we enter the strategic time-out.

RR 61/1 in 8 overs: Willie drops out. Padikkal pulls his hips away for once. Length on the stump to Buttler and he pulls it on the fine leg for another. FOUR! This is short but too straight and Padikkal pulls it to the square leg boundary. Siraj makes a forward dive into the deep end, but it’s still short. That brings the fifty for RR in 7.3 overs. Two singles follow. SIX! Too full and Padikkal strains it to the ground and just over the long fence.

RR 47/1 in 7 overs: Dropped! Buttler drives straight back to the bowler and it went through Akash’s hands for a single. Padikkal is knocked out again while trying to drive. Dropped! Buttler survives twice in the same over. He chops over the line and gets a top edge that goes high into the night sky and Willey drops it at a deep square leg. SIX! Buttler gets the meat from the bat on this one and long hammers this slot ball out. A few more to end the over after Buttler pushes a length ball through the covers.

RR 35/1 in 6 overs: Buttler sweeps this length ball across the stumps to have a short fine leg. Padikkal opens his face to guide this backpoint, but a brilliant save within the circle allows only one. Full on Buttler’s pads and he shoots to the center of the wicket for another. Two singles and a point to end the over.

RR 30/1 in 5 overs: Akash Deep on the attack. Buttler hits the back foot half way for a quick single. Beaten! Akash bends it to Padikkal for a length and moves it away to defeat its outer edge. Short length on leg and Padikkal tucks it in front of a pair of his hips. Padikkal punches out wildly and is beaten. Tossed his kisses back for two more. This one is again slanted to the left-hander and any movement outside the field beats him again outside.

RR 25/1 in 4 overs: Beaten! Willey moves the ball sharply away from a length outside and beats Padikkal. Length drifting down leg this time and Padikkal misses the flick and hares for a leg-bye. Angling for Buttler, in the canal outside and beats Buttler’s innocent jab out. Buttlers knocks this off his pads and Anuj Rawat lets the ball through his legs in the middle of the wicket to allow for a few runs. One more for Buttler in the middle of the wicket from the inside of the bat. Four! Length again in the channel and Padikkal gets a thick outer rim on the checkered drive and it beats the man by a short third and races away to the rope.

RR 17/1 in 3 overs: Siraj starts with a wide lower leg. There is a leg before appeal for Buttler’s wicket of the second ball. However, the ump is not interested. SIX! Padikkal opens his account in style. A half volley on the pads, which Padikkal has polled in the stands.

RR 6/1 in 2 overs: Willy to bowl. There is a short third man, very well stationed. Jaiswal and Buttler are very quick between the wickets, turning the wickets in half. Beaten; Jaiswal needs to be a little careful before going for the inside-out shot against Willey. bowled! Jaiswal plays for the swing. Willey, however, gets this on his line.

RR 2/0 in 1 about: Curved seam, there is a little movement away from the right-handed Buttler on strike. While the Englishman goes wide with a single, he just manages to drag Ishan Kishan into the Orange Cap standings. Jaiswal also takes a single from the last ball.

Umpires Saiyed Khalid and Anil Chaudhary make their way to the center. Buttler and Jaiswal to open the battle. Siraj has the new ball in hand.

WHAT THE CAPTAINS SAID

Sanju Simson: It looks like a very different surface from the one we’ve played in the past few games. We all have to take care of our own part and try to win the small moments. We will play against the same team.

Faf du Plessis: Let’s go bowling. The field doesn’t look very different, so we’ll have to wait and see what the dew does. The fact that I’m happy is that we stuck in the last game. It gives a lot of confidence to the group. Even if you don’t play your best, it’s nice. We are unchanged.

PITCH REPORT

“This field has a lot less grass. It’s very hard. It’s not something we’ve seen so far with the fields here. Stick to the hard lengths. Expect a score over 160,” says Matthew Hayden.

RR vs RCB MATCH EXAMPLE

Forty-eight hours after the battle of ‘Kings’ at Brabourne Stadium, a ‘battle royal’ will take place at Wankhede Stadium as a back in form Rajasthan Royals face off against Royal Challengers Bangalore on Tuesday.

Contrary to the trend of this edition of the Indian Premier League, the Royals took two wins defending goals against former champions Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians. This underscores the Royals’ belief in the quality of their resources.

The Challengers, on the other hand, have moved with the tide – losing the toss and game against Punjab Kings by five wickets and winning the toss and game against Kolkata Knight Riders by three wickets.

Notably for the Royals, except for the Kiwi Trent Boult, all bowling options are homegrown internationals – Prasidh Krishna, Navdeep Saini, R. Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal.

With Jos Buttler making his presence felt with a 100 against Mumbai Indians, and contributing the duo of Sanju Samson and Shimron Hetmyer, Devdutt Paddikkal’s failure was lost in the background. Overall, given the balance of the teams, Royals is the early favorite to go all the way.

An inconclusive Challengers’ lone win in two games came after the side’s bowlers set it up in a low-scoring encounter against Kolkata Knight Riders. It was indeed a great comeback for the bowlers after looking so ineffective defending 205 in the opener against Punjab
kings. Against the Royals, the Challengers will have to raise the bar a few notches to pose a threat.
