Pathan named IPL 2022 winning captain Hardik Pandya as skipper of his combination
the 15e edition of the Indian Premier League was a big celebration, especially with two new teams – Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants – who are competing this season. Both teams made it to the playoffs in their first attempt and the Titans lifted the prestigious silverware to sign out in style.
The season witnessed wonderful performances from some of the top players, but some new faces left everyone in the cricket club stunned with their performance on the big stage. Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan, who shares his thoughts on some of this season’s best performers, has declared his best XI of the 2022 IPL.
Pathan’s lineup kicks off with Jos Buttler and KL Rahul in the opening position. While the former, as part of the Rajasthan Royals, finished with 863 runs in the season with four centuries and four half-centuries to his name, the latter finished with 616 runs including two centuries and four half-centuries. Both players performed in the playoff phase, with Buttler reaching the final with RR.
Pathan chose the skipper of Rajasthan Royals Sanju Samson for the No. 3 spot. Samson led his team to the IPL 2022 final, the first time the team reached the final since its inaugural season. Samson’s composure with the bat was something to look forward to this season, and while he managed to score just two half-centuries in 17 games, he played some crucial strokes responsible for the team’s victory.
Pathan’s mid-range batters include IPL 2022 winning skipper Hardik Pandya, followed by the powerful powerhitters of Punjab Kings and GT, Liam Livingstone and David Miller, respectively. While Pandya managed to lead his side to their first IPL title in their first ever game in the competition, he was also a crucial all-rounder as he marked his return with the ball. Livingstone and Miller were their team’s saviors as they came to bat when the squad needed someone to anchor the innings and play the part of the finisher.
Pathan included two bowling all-rounders in his GT vice-captain’s XI Rashid Khan and Royal Challengers Bangalore’s Harshal Patel. Rashid finished this season with 19 wickets in 16 matches, while Patel scalped the same number of wickets in 15 matches. The spinner had better economy, 6.60 compared to Patel’s 7.66 this season, and both have the ability to supply their team with the crucial wickets.
The bowling unit of Pathan’s lineup includes the Titans’ pacer Mohammad Shami, Sunrisers Hyderabad speedster Umran Malik, Royals’ spinner Yuzvendra Chahal and Delhi Capitals spinner Kuldeep Yadav as the 12e Man. As part of the champions side, Shami scalped 20 wickets for the Titans this season.
On the other hand, Malik, who was also named the Emerging Player of the Season, impressed everyone with the ability to consistently clock deliveries at 150+ mph. Chahal’s season was also impressive as he finished with 27 wickets under his belt to become the top wicket taker of the season. Yadav, who was on the bench at KKR last season, made a brilliant comeback, finishing his season with 21 wickets, winning the Player of the Match award four times in 14 matches.
Irfan Pathan’s best XI of IPL 2022: Jos Buttler, KL Rahul, Sanju Samson (wk), Hardik Pandya (c), Liam Livingstone, David Miller, Rashid Khan, Harshal Patel, Mohammad Shami, Yuzvendra Chahal, Umran Malik (12th Man- Kuldeep Yadav).
