IPL 2022: Ravindra Jadeja Didn’t Look Like a Natural Leader: Ravi Shastri

Former Head Coach of India Ravi Shastric says Ravindra Jadeja is not a “natural captain” and looked like a “fish in water” while leading Chennai Super Kings in the IPL 2022.

MS Dhoni, who had resigned from his captaincy at the start of the season but was reinstated after eight games, should return to the lead next year, provided he is fit and ready to play, Shastri said.

The decision to give Ravindra Jadeja Captaicy cost the team: Ravi Shastri

Chennai Super Kings lost 6 matches under Jadeja. “Jadeja is not a natural captain. He has not been captain at any level. So to give him the responsibility, I found Jadeja a bit difficult,” Shastri said on ESPNcricinfo’s T20 Time Out.

“People may want to condemn Jaddu, but it’s not his fault. He has never been captain. He looked like a fish in water, totally misplaced and he is much better off as a player. Because he is one of the best in the business when it comes to all-rounders.

So let him focus on his cricket. That cost CSK a few games early on. If you see what shape they’re in now, if they had this early on, they’ll be right there in the mix.

In just three games since Dhoni recaptured the captaincy, Super Kings have won two of their four games. They are now in ninth place and must win all three of their remaining games to force a playoff appearance.

Shastri also stated that the Super Kings should take the time to select their future captain, even if that means waiting until next year’s mini-auction to attract someone from outside the group, as Royal Challengers Bangalore did with former Super Kings player Faf du Plessis.

Ruturaj Gaikwad could be an option. During the 2021-2022 season, Gaikwad led his state team in just five one-day and five T20s. He has become a crucial Super Kings player since his breakout in the IPL season in 2020, having been retained by Dhoni, Jadeja and Moeen Ali for this season. But Shastri is not in favor.

“You have to see where the player comes from, what levels of cricket he has played,” Shastri said. ‘Did he bring a side? Does he have the flair for captaincy?

“You have to research these kinds of things before jumping to conclusions before deciding whether a player should be captain in the future or not. Not just because he scores points, he is the highest points scorer, you become captain.

“That happens a lot in India. Not only at the state level, but also at the national level where a player has just been wagered because he gets points. He may never have been captain, may have very little experience, but his name is in there.

“I think captaincy is a completely different profession. It requires flair, the ability to read the game, man management skills and most importantly the ability to communicate not only with players but with media these days, so it comes with a lot of add -us. ”

Only time will tell who CSK is looking at as a potential candidate. Deepak Chahar is another candidate but he has been injured and has been out for at least six months.
