IPL 2022: Complete List of 10 Team Captains in Charge

Even if Rohit Sharma, the Indian Premier League’s most successful captain, returns to lead the Mumbai Indians, the Royal Challengers Bangalore will change roles for the first time since 2013, after Virat Kohli decided to step down after last season.

While four franchises have chosen new leaders this season, the two newly introduced teams have also chosen Indian star players as skippers.

sports star takes a look at the captains of all 10 franchises for IPL 2022:

1. Ravindra Jadeja (Chennai Super Kings)

Dhoni has handed over the CSK captaincy to Ravindra Jadeja. The left-hander is only the third player to lead CSK. Dhoni has a winning record of 59.6% as captain. He led CSK to nine finals and won the title four times – in 2010, 2011, 2018 and 2021.

2. Rohit Sharma (Mumbai Indians)

MI’s five titles in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020 have come under Rohit’s captaincy. He is the most successful captain – among those who have played in more than six games – in the T20 competition. He also walks into the tournament in great form; India has won all T20I matches after the 2021 T20 World Cup with him at the helm

3. Shreyas Iyer (Kolkata Knight Riders)

After letting Eoin Morgan go, KKR broke the bank for Shreyas and acquired his services for Rs. 12.25 crore from the pick list during the IPL 2022 auction. Shreyas also has a lot of experience leading a T20 side, having led the Delhi Capitals to the first play-offs in their first play-offs in seven years in 2019. He did even better the following season, finishing second.

4. Rishabh Pant (Capitals of Delhi)

The explosive midfielder took over for Shreyas after the latter suffered an injury. Since then, Pant has grown stronger and stronger. He led DC to nine wins in 16 games in his first and only season as captain (2021). Coach Ricky Ponting says: “Rishabh’s level of maturity over the past few seasons has just been through the roof. When I first joined the Delhi Capitals camp, Rishabh was just starting to appear on the scene. He’s done a great job as captain so far.”

5. Faf du Plessis (Royal Challengers Bangalore)

du Plessis takes over from Kohli as captain. Under Kohli, RCB had won 64 of its 140 matches and lost 69. The right-hander bought for Rs. 7 crore, was crucial to CSK’s title win in 2021, taking 633 runs to finish the second-highest run-getter. du Plessis was also the leading run scorer for Chennai in IPL 2020.

“The opportunity to captain a franchise like RCB is huge and a role I was happy to accept. As the leader of the team, I will strive to lead from the front and make sure we become the best,” he said.

Although du Plessis is first signing up for a leadership role in the IPL, he has led South Africa to success in the limited-overs format multiple times between 2012 and 19, with a 63.51 percent success rate in Twenty20 Internationals.

6. Kane Williamson (Sunrisers Hyderabad)

2022 is the first season in which Williamson starts as a full-time IPL captain. After leading his national team, New Zealand, to the final of the T20 World Cup last year, Williamson will be looking to put down the ghosts of IPL 2021, as his match finished at the very bottom of the table. He has captained 33 games, won 16 and lost the same number.

7. Sanju Samson (Rajasthan Royals)

Despite a bleak outing last season, Rajasthan has decided to show his faith in Samson. Samson, the first player to score a century on his captaincy debut, needs to get consistent and in turn score more points for the team.

8. Mayank Agarwal (Punjab Kings)

Although Mayank lost the only match as captain – after former captain KL Rahul dropped out of IPL 2021 due to appendicitis – the PBKS management has put their trust in him. The righthanded batter from Karnataka has played 100 games and scored 2131 runs in the IPL. This will be Mayank’s first stint as a full-time captain of an IPL side.

9. K.L. Rahul (Lucknow Super Giants)

While his captaincy record is not legible, his 59 batting average is the best of a captain in the IPL.

10. Hardik Pandya (Gujarat Titans)

Hardik has never led a team. In addition, the Gujarat skipper’s form is still under the scanner as he continues to struggle after recovering from a back problem. It is also not clear whether he will put his arms on the ground this season.
