India’s Predicted XI vs South Africa, 1st ODI: Will Rajat Patidar, Mukesh Kumar Debut?

After a successful conclusion to the 3-match T20I series against South Africa, the Indian cricket team is shifting its focus to the ODI assignment. A few fresh faces like Rajat Patidar and Mukesh Kumar have been lined up in the Indian team for the 3-match series. But will they make their debut in the opener itself.

While the two uncapped players will undoubtedly be in the spotlight, thanks to their exemplary performances in domestic cricket, a number of other youngsters would also like to impress in the absence of established stars such as Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, etc.

Here’s what we think India’s XI could be against South Africa in the 1st ODI:

Shikhar Dhawan: Shikhar Dhawan has been appointed as the team skipper for the series and remains a key player for the Indian team in the 50-over format. He would try to lead the team from the front and score some runs at the top.

Shubman Gill: His performances in the series against the West Indies and Zimbabwe were truly world-class. Replicating the same form in the ODI series against South Africa would be Gill’s primary target.

Shreyas Iyer: The absence of Virat Kohli has given Shreyas Iyer a golden opportunity to get some good competition training. The midfielder, who is also in the reserves for the 2022 T20 World Cup, must get his mojo back.

Sanju Samson: A hugely popular player among the masses, but Sanju Samson has not yet become a fixture in the Indian team in any of the three formats. In the series against South Africa, he is almost ready to take on the role of wicket-keeper.

Rajat Patidar: After making a name for himself in the Indian Premier League with the Royal Challengers Bangalore, Patidar showed his class in domestic cricket and was rightfully rewarded with a call-up to India. The batter is likely to make his debut in the opener of the ODI series.

Rahul Tripathi: Another consistent performer in the IPL and domestic cricket, Tripathi is expected to take on the role of finisher in the ODI team. The opportunities were rare, but Tripathi should definitely seize the opportunities that come.

Shardul Thakur: For the past year or so, Shardul Thakur has fallen off the selectors’ radar. Now that the older players are equipped, the ODI series against South Africa is a great opportunity for him to make the world notice his skills again.

Kuldeep Yadav: Injury and form issues have seriously affected Kuldeep’s chances of playing regularly in the Indian team in recent years. With a view to the 2023 ODI World Cup, the Chinese spinner has been given a great platform to showcase his abilities in the ODI series against South Africa.

Mohammed Siraj: A late inclusion in the Indian team for the South African T20Is, Mohammed Siraj knows what to expect from the Proteas batters. With the chances of flying to Australia for the T20 World Cup still alive, Siraj must prove his qualities against South Africa.

Deepak Chahar: His qualities are not hidden from anyone. With Japrit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami out, Chahar will lead the Indian pace attack in the 3 ODIs.

Ravi Bishnoi: Since Yuzvendra Chahal is not part of the ODI series, Ravi Bishnoi Kuldeep Yadav will be teaming up in the spin bowling unit. The series presents a huge opportunity for Bishnoi to strengthen his advocacy for a permanent spot on the Indian team.
