Rumors of a split between the franchise and the player have been going on since May 2022.
All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has been associated with the Chennai Super Kings since 2012, when the franchise first bought it for a whopping $2 million. That particular auction showed how desperate the then two-time champions were to get the all-rounder on their team. Once they did, CSK finished runner-up four times, in 2012, 2013, 2015 and 2019, and won the cup twice in 2018 and 2021.
CSK is a franchise known for building strong relationships with not only the team members, but everyone in their family besides the crew and support staff and all stakeholders for that matter. And in the case of the Jadeja-CSK relationship, the franchise even gave him the captain’s armband for the start of the IPL 2022.
But that all came under the scanner when rumors of the ace all-rounder and franchise’s rift kicked in. It has been a difficult season for CSK this year, as under Jadeja’s captaincy, the team lost six out of eight games and the all-rounder’s performance deteriorated drastically. Rumors of a split started when CSK re-appointed MS Dhoni as captain midway through the tournament, and soon Jadeja was ruled out due to injury and therefore missed the rest of IPL 2022.
It is now reported that Jadeja is almost ready to end his ties to the franchise and there have been several instances that have fueled these rumours.
Let’s take a look at the cases that built up the rumors:
1. CSK Captaincy saga
Chennai Super Kings have only grown over the years, since the beginning of the competition and the main man behind the success of the team is MS Dhoni, the skipper. After leading on the side for more than a decade, before the IPL 2022, Dhoni decided to pass the baton to his best man, Ravindra Jadeja. But the plan didn’t quite work out and things didn’t fall into place for the franchise as CSK struggled to win games. Because Jadeja’s form was under the scanner, MS Dhonic was reappointed as skipper halfway through.
2. Abrupt Injury
Returning the captain’s armband to MS Dhoni halfway through the tournament raised many questions, but management said they were unwilling to compromise on Jadeja’s form as a player, which had declined due to the additional captaincy pressure. But once Dhoni returned to the captaincy role, Jadeja missed a number of games due to injury and it was later announced by the management that the all-rounder had been banned from the remaining games. Then the rumors of the breakup started.
3. Jadeja’s Instagram Activities
The rumors got out, people started talking and Jadeja and CSK were trending on Twitter, but there had been nothing legit to prove the same. That gave the fans a sense of relief, but Jadeja’s actions on social media got everyone talking again. He deleted all of his Instagram posts related to the franchise from 2021 and 2022, adding the not-so-necessary spice to the already burning fire. Then it was noticed that the all-rounder no longer followed CSK’s Instagram page.
4. Jadeja’s Press Conference
After beating England for a century in the fifth and rescheduled Test match, Jadeja marked his return to cricket in style after overcoming injury concerns. After the game of the day, when he attended a press conference, he was asked whether the CSK captaincy fiasco in the back of his mind bothered him as he walked away to bat. To which Jadeja replied “definitely not” saying that he was focused on representing his nation and doing good for the Indian teamand left the CSK fans undisturbed.
5. Cryptic Social Media Posts
All that happened wasn’t enough, on July 18, the 33-year-old uploaded a mysterious story to his Instagram account that read: ‘Lower your standards on no one or anything. Self-respect is everything.’ Amid all the fissure rumours, Jadeja’s cryptic story added fuel to the long-burning fire. Following his actions, ‘We Yellove you Jadeja’ went viral on Twitter when fans shared tweets urging Jadeja not to sever ties with the franchise. In particular, CSK shares congratulations to the all-rounder every time he performs well, or every time he is named in the roster.
6. Jadeja’s Twitter Actions
Just a few days ago, some Twitter users noticed Jadeja’s action on the platform and noticed that he had removed his viral comment from one of CSK’s tweets. Prior to the IPL, the franchise uploaded a collage of Jadeja donning the yellow jersey in 2012 and a recent photo from 2022 captioned “10 Years of Super Jaddu” to highlight the player’s ten-year partnership with CSK. Jadeja had posted a very sweet comment on this post, replying “10 more to go.” But the deletion of the comment only fueled the crack rumours.
According to reports, Jadeja is said to be ‘no contact‘ with the Chennai Super Kings franchise and its management, and he is reportedly planning to move to a new franchise for next season by registering himself as one of the players in the trading window. While the franchise and skipper Dhoni would try to solve this problem as much as possible, the CSK fans would pray that the all-rounder stays behind and doesn’t leave the franchise.
