Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) managed to live another day in the 15th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) after beating the newcomers Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in their Eliminator match played at the iconic Eden Gardens, Kolkata.

LSG skipper KL Rahul won the toss and chose to bowl first. His decision was proven correct as RCB captain Faf du Plessis went early but the duo of Rajat Patidar and Virat Kohli made the Red Army make a resounding comeback in the innings. Patidar was the aggressor between the duo as he continued to push boundaries almost everywhere.

Pacer Avesh Khan got the prized wicket from Kohli. Australian batters Glenn Maxwell and Mahipal Lomror didn’t contribute much. However, an excellent finish by wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik (37* from 23 balls) and a sensational centenary knock from Rajat Patidar (112* from 54 balls) saw the Red Army break the 200-run mark.

For LSG, pacer Mohsin Khan was the bowlers’ choice as he finished 1/25 in his quota of four left. Avesh, Krunal Pandya and Ravi Bishnoi also scalped one wicket each. Sri Lanka express pacer Dushmantha Chameera was the most expensive bowler for LSG as he conceded 54 runs in his four overs.

LSG had a disastrous start to their chase

LSG was chasing 208 points to win and had a bad start when they lost their star batter, Quinton de Kock, with his personal score of six points. Indian batter Manan Vohra (19) played a few strikes, but also left quickly. It was the duo of skipper KL Rahul and Deepak Hooda who ensured that the newcomers stayed in the competition.

After Hooda left with 45 runs, Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis and Rahul kept the scoreboard going. However, LSG lost the lot in the endovers as Rahul (79 out of 58) and Stoinis were fired in back-to-back overs. As a result, LSG lost the match by a margin of 14 runs and was knocked out of the tournament.

Losing skipper, KL Rahul said:

I think it’s pretty obvious – the reasons why we didn’t win. We lowered ourselves into the field. Dropping easy catches never helps. The difference was obvious that Patidar played such a knock. When someone in the top three hundred scores, the team wins more often. They played very well and we were poor. We take back many positives. It’s a new franchise. We made a lot of mistakes, every team does. Must try to come back stronger. It’s a young team. They learn from their mistakes, go back home and try to become better players. Mohsin showed everyone how good he is and what skill he possesses. As he grows with confidence, he will be able to clock speeds that are much higher. He will hopefully learn and develop a few more skills next season.

Winning skipper, Faf du Plessis said:

Today was a special day. The boys put in a remarkable performance. About the moon. For a young guy to play like he did. The way he celebrated it also tells you that he has a good head on his shoulders. His hundred was one of the best I’ve seen in the IPL. Our bowlers were clear and calm and that was good. He has all the shots. Every time he attacks, he puts the pressure back on the opposition. It’s important to celebrate despite something big coming up. We were very happy as a group. As a group we needed some calm presence. We didn’t feel like it was a big game. Everyone was calm and relaxed. Harshal is the joker in the pack. A special card that I can choose. He bowls the important overs. The penultimate over of his changed the game for us.

Player of the match, Rajat Patidar said:

When I timed the ball, my focus was on it. The last left from the power play when Krunal was bowling at me, my execution then went fine and I gained confidence after that. The wicket was pretty good and I played some good shots. I never feel any pressure because I think I have the ability to make up for the dots. I was busy playing for my club after the 2021 IPL. I was not chosen after the 2021 IPL, but I had no control over that.
