Andre Russell crushed an unbeaten 49 runs on 28 deliveries to take it 22-3 with the ball as Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by 54 runs in match 61 of IPL 2022 at the MCA Stadium in Pune. The Caribbean power-hitter brought his side to a total of 177/6. The Orange Army struggled during their chase and the loss means Kane Williamson’s team has now lost five games on the bounce.

Speaking of the game, Shreyas Iyer won the toss and KKR chose to bat first. Venkatesh Iyer’s poor season was extended when he was sent off for just seven runs. Ajinkya Rahane and Nitish Rana scored 28 and 26 runs respectively, while captain Shreyas Iyer scored 15 runs. Billings played a good hand of 34 runs on 29 deliveries, but it was Russell who made his way to 49. Speedster Umran Malik was the bowlers’ choice for SRH due to his fiery spell of 3/33 in four overs.

In pursuit of 178 to win, Skipper Williamson’s disastrous season continued as he played another slow innings of nine runs off 17 balls. His opening partner Abhishek Sharma looked good in his fast innings of 43 runs on 28 deliveries, including four fours and two sixes.

Rahul Tripathi made just nine runs when Tim Southee got him out with a great reflex catch. Nicholas Pooran also hit one straight back into the hands of Sunil Narine while racking up just two runs. Aiden Markram hit 32 runs with three maximums, but SRH never seemed to really get going in the run chase as they could only get 123/8 in 20 overs.

With this win, KKR is in sixth place with 12 points and still alive in the league, while SRH has slipped to eighth by ten points. For his all-round performance Andre Russell won the Player of the Match award.
